Is my produce safe to eat? Tomatoes with salmonella give the US a scare.
There are over 160 people in 17 states that became sick by eating tomatoes that have salmonella in them and there has even been one death linked to these tomatoes. The FDA is still investigating but has ruled out a few types of tomatoes.
Tomatoes to avoid are roma tomatoes and regular red tomatoes. Most places have pulled these from their shelves so you should be safe while shopping but if you have these types of tomatoes you should throw them out. Washing these doesn’t neccesarily help as the salmonella can be found in the fruit not just on it. You are by far better off not eating these tomatoes because produce in the US is shipped state to state everyday.
There is good news for you tomato lovers out there however, if you have tomatoes that are labeled “home grown” or still have the stem on it. Also grape and cherry tomatoes have been labeled as safe by the FDA. Tomatoes that you know the source of for sure (i.e. from your garden or farmer’s market) should also be safe but you should check the FDA website to know for sure.
